We speak the wisdom of God in a mystery,... which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
Jesus said to him, Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known me, Philip?
(1 Corinthians 2, 7; John 14, 9)
The revelation of the Son of God, when He came to earth, was not in power and glory. He was brought up in the despised town of Nazareth, where He learned a manual trade. Jesus came to us in the greatest possible humility; the poorest and the most despised could turn to Him. He veiled His divine glory so as to share our state with us and, above all, to give His life out of love towards us. Outwardly nothing distinguished Jesus from other men. At the same time He was entirely different from others; He was not even understood by His own brothers. His love, His burning desire to glorify God, His words and His deeds were unparalleled among men.
The great men of this world did not discern who Jesus was. Only the humble, who deeply sensed their lost condition, realized that Jesus was the promised Messiah, the Saviour of the world, and believed in Him. Even today Jesus does not impose Himself on us, but He reveals Himself to all who seek Him. We can approach Him, not physically but by faith. If anything hinders us, it is our prejudices, our unbelief, our pride, our conceit.
Nevertheless, Jesus is waiting for us. To come to Him, read the Bible, starting with the gospels. Pray that God will remove the hindrances that prevent us from confiding in Him. Then we shall really get to know Him as the One who loves us and can and will save us. He wants to accompany us on life's pathway until we are with Him for eternity.
