I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, ...nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39
"Many years ago," my acquaintance said, "my father had an elderly, God-fearing friend who used to visit us regularly at home." Then he spoke of this experience that the friend had related.
"When I had already been saved some years, someone asked me, "Mr. Ross, have you never doubted your salvation? Have you never thought you might have made a mistake in imagining that you are saved for ever? It was remarkable that he should ask me that question just at that moment. The previous evening, on the way to a meeting where I was to preach the gospel, it seemed that a voice was speaking to me, saying, 'Donald Ross, what a hypocrite you are! You aren't saved! ' Shocked as I was, I wondered , 'Can that be true? After preaching Christ to people for years I'm not even saved myself?' But I was able to pray: Lord, I thank Thee, I truly am saved, for Thou hast died on the cross for hypocrites, too. None is turned away who comes as he is.'
"The same moment that elderly believer uttered these words, the gloomy cloud of doubt disappeared. He knew that he had been listening to the devil, not to God. Doubts never come from God."
This experience must encourage all who struggle with doubts that undermine their faith. Today's verse leaves nothing unclear. It has always been a help in this respect.
